Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN) launched an unhinged attack on New York Assemblyman and New York City mayoral favorite Zohran Mamdani (D) on Tuesday using footage of the September 11 attack on the World Trade Center.
Mamdani has been the frontrunner in the New York City mayoral election since his stunning upset win over former Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary earlier this year. Heading into Tuesday’s Election Day, Mamdani still held strong leads in the polls over Cuomo — who stayed in the race as an independent after his primary defeat — and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa.
Since stepping into the national spotlight, Mamdani has been the subject of relentless attacks on both his policies and his faith. Mamdani, a Muslim, was born in Uganda and moved to New York with his family when he was 7 years old. The World Trade Center attacks occurred a month before he turned 10.
Many of those who have taken aim at his faith have done so while invoking 9/11. Weeks earlier, Cuomo came under fire when he agreed with a radio host that Mamdani would cheer if a similar attacked happened in the city.
On Monday night, Ogles posted a video on X/Twitter with the caption, “WAKE UP NEW YORK!” The video was a compilation of raw footage of the planes striking the Twin Towers.
That tweet was met with harsh condemnation online.
