President Donald Trump teased Vice President JD Vance for “butting in to conversations” during a White House breakfast for Republican senators held on Wednesday morning.
The gathering came the morning after what Fox’s Bret Baier described as a “big loss” for Republicans following Tuesday night’s election results that saw Democratic candidates win most major races, including the NYC mayoral race, and the Virginia and New Jersey governors’ races.
Trump’s statement was based mainly on encouraging his Republican senators to terminate the filibuster, so that the GOP can remain in power permanently, adding, “If we do what I say, they’ll likely never obtain power.”
At the end of his remarks, Trump pivoted to a recent meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping and shared a story about engaging with one of Xi’s deputies in attendance.
“I made a comment to one of them and got no response,” Trump said. “I said, Are you going to answer me?’ No response, and President Xi did not let him. Any question, I said, ‘I want my cabinet to behave like that. I am demanding, sit up like that, nice and straight. Never seen men so scared in their lives.’ They have an equivalent of a vice president. I said, ‘Are you going to answer my question?’ He said, ‘It is what is wrong. I will answer all questions.’”
Trump then pivoted to his own vice president, saying, ” Why don’t you behave like that? JD does not behave like that.”
“JD butts into conversations,” Trump joked as the room laughed. “At least for a couple of days, we’ll keep you long-term, but a couple of days of that would be nice.”
Vance could be seen sitting up straighter as Trump addressed him.
