AUSTIN (KXAN) — You’ve heard of Trump Tower, but what about the President Donald J. Trump Highway?
That’s the proposed designated name for Interstate 35 in Travis County, according to a new bill filed Friday by Texas Rep. Joanne Shofner (R-Nacogdoches). The bill outlines the design and construction of markets “indicating the designation as the President Donald J. Trump Highway” alongside any other existing designations.
The proposed legislation also calls for the addition of markers at each end of the highway as well as “at appropriate intermediate sites” within the corridor.
It wouldn’t be the first designation for I-35 within Texas. Other designations include the PanAm Expressway in San Antonio, the Interregional Highway in Austin and the Jack Kultgen Freeway in Waco.
The highway has also been designated Texas’ portion of the Purple Heart Trail, a “symbolic and honorary system of roads, highways, bridges, and other monuments that give tribute to the men and women who have been awarded the Purple Heart medal,” according to the trail’s website. While the format and designs of the designation signage vary from place to place, there are dedicated sections within 45 U.S. states and in Guam, trail officials noted.
If the bill passes, it would take effect on Sept. 1, 2025.
