Bill Maher is not the only prominent Democrat enjoying dinner with President Donald Trump.
Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) revealed he had a great time when he joined the president for supper, saying he would use the same word as his pal Maher and call Trump a “gracious” host. The senator shared a brief recap of his meal with the president — which happened in January, right before Trump’s second inauguration — during an interview with Lara Trump on her Fox News program, My View, on Saturday night.
“[For] that experience, I would use the same words my friend Bill Maher uses — gracious. Absolutely,” Fetterman said. “It was pleasant and it wasn’t a show or anything. it was just a conversation, and we might could things we agree on, and I thought it was a good conversation.”
His words echoed those of Maher, after the comic went and had dinner with Trump at the White House in April.
Fetterman then asked “Why wouldn’t the senator of the state that carried him in the election” have dinner with the president? If the answer is merely because he is a Democrat and Trump is a Republican, Fetterman said he is not buying it.
“It’s not about ‘bending a knee.’ It’s about having a conversation with the president, and I think that’s entirely appropriate,” Fetterman added.
The senator, at other points in his interview with Trump, criticized his own party — something he has been increasingly willing to do lately. He said Democrats did a “bad job” handling the border, which he said is “undeniable.”
He also said he would never compare President Trump or other Republicans to “Nazis,” as some politicians like Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker (D) have done recently.
Fetterman urged Democrats and Republicans to “work together” and get the government shutdown over with ASAP.
