When it comes to personal defense, my preferred calibers are .357 Magnum<\/a> and .45 ACP<\/a>, with a grudging nod to the .38 Special<\/a> and 9mm Luger<\/a> for concealed carry when I simply cannot conceal a larger handgun<\/a>. There are other similar handgun calibers, such as the .44 Special<\/a> and the .45 Colt<\/a>, and of course, the .357 SIG<\/a> and 10mm Auto<\/a> are viable. I don\u2019t place easy shooting at the top of the list, but the handgun and caliber combination should be controllable with effort. <\/p>\n

It may seem odd, then, that I own one small-bore I carry in certain situations. An old round that refuses to die is the .32 ACP<\/a>. When it comes to the .32 ACP, I find a cartridge with much greater merit than the .22s<\/a> and the .25<\/a>. I find little difference between the .32 ACP, the .380 ACP<\/a>, and most .32 H&R Magnum<\/a> loads in the real world. <\/p>\n

That may be damning with faint praise, but the .32 ACP has a real-world history that is very extensive. Introduced in 1899, the .32 ACP saw service in WWI and has served as a police and military cartridge in Europe for many years, even arming the Swiss Guard. Its merits are relative, as there are better cartridges.<\/p>\n
