MAGA Senator Kills Idea of a Trump Family Political Dynasty

Date:

Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AK) is evidently not betting on one of President Donald Trump’s kids pulling a George W. Bush and following in his political footsteps.

Tuberville, while speaking to reporters on Capitol Hill Wednesday, said that Donald Trump is “the last Trump that we’ll have in office.”

The comment came as Tuberville was pushing for ditching the filibuster — something the president has been urging congressional Republicans to do, in order to end the government shutdown.

“If we need to bust it, let’s bust it. Lets’ knock it down to 51 [votes],” Tuberville told reporters.

He continued:

“The power needs to go to the president and let him get something done. If we don’t, we’re going to lose our country. It’s going to be over with. So he’s got three years, he’s the last Trump that we’ll have in office, he’s hard nosed, he believes in this country, let’s give him some support. If he wants to blow up the filibuster, I’m all for it.”

His comments came a day after his fellow conservative, Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA), said he told Trump he was against scrapping the filibuster. Kennedy told CNN that he explained to Trump that his job was to “kill bad ideas,” and that he was not in favor of throwing out the filibuster rule that requires 60 votes to pass legislation.

And while Tuberville seems not to expect Trump’s kids — Donald Jr., Eric Trump, Barron Trump, and daughters Ivanka and Tiffany Trump — to run for office, it is not unprecedented. Obviously, George W. Bush won the 2000 election, less than a decade after his father, George H.W. Bush was in office, and went on to become a two-term Republican president.

And back in the early 19th century, John Quincy Adams became the 6th president of the U.S. — about 25 years after his father, John Adams, followed George Washington and became the nation’s second commander-in-chief.

Speculators on the election prediction market Predictit currently rate Donald Trump Jr. the sixth most likely Republican to win the 2028 GOP presidential nomination.
