President Donald Trump on Monday reaffirmed his disdain for Rob Reiner after the director and his wife were killed in their home Sunday.
The couple was found dead in their Los Angeles home on Sunday afternoon. Initial reports named their son, Nick Reiner, as the alleged suspect, and Nick was taken into custody the next day.
In the wake of the shocking murders, tributes to the Reiner family came from figures all across the political spectrum. The director was responsible for beloved films like This Is Spinal Tap, Stand By Me, and The Princess Bride.
Trump, however, took a different approach. In a Truth Social post, he accused Reiner of suffering from Trump Derangement Syndrome and claimed the director was “tortured and struggling.” The post was widely condemned by countless figures in the worlds of both media and politics.
During a Q&A in the Oval Office on Monday afternoon, Trump was asked for his take on the backlash he received over the post. He responded by attacking the slain director even more when he added:
Well, I wasn’t a fan of his at all. He was a deranged person, as far as Trump is concerned. He said — he knew it was false. In fact, it’s the exact opposite — that I was a friend of Russia, controlled by Russia. You know, it was the Russia hoax. He was one of the people behind it. I think he hurt himself, career-wise. He became like a deranged person. Trump Derangement Syndrome. So I was not a fan of Rob Reiner at all, in any way, shape or form. I thought he was very bad for our country.
