House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) broke former Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s (R-CA) record for the longest House floor speech on Thursday.

Jeffries, in an effort to delay the House vote on President Donald Trump’s massive spending package, began his speech at 4:53 a.m. in the nation’s capital. Throughout his marathon speech, Jeffries called the bill an “immoral document.” He also referred to it as the “one big, ugly bill,” a reference to the name “Big, Beautiful Bill” coined by Trump.

Critics of the bill have mainly focused on its proposed cuts to Medicaid and SNAP food assistance. It will also include increased funding for border enforcement. The Congressional Budget Office has projected that it will increase the national debt by more than $3 trillion.

Jeffries also called on just four Republicans — any four — to say “no” to the bill and give the opposition the votes necessary to block it.

The vote was set to begin shortly after the conclusion of Jeffries’ speech.
