AUSTIN (KXAN) – Texas women’s basketball found out Thursday night their opponent in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. William & Mary took down High Point in a First Four game in Austin at Moody Center to earn a duel with the top-seeded Longhorns.
This is the Tribe’s first appearance in the NCAA tournament for either the men or women’s basketball programs.
Texas on the other hand is making their 36th trip to the NCAA tournament.
“I’m on a team that truly wants to win together and are very much selfless,” said Longhorns junior center Kyla Oldacre. “We can go a long way. The [National Championship] for example.”
William & Mary’s duel with Texas will be the second-to-last matchup in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. Saturday’s matchup at 8:45 p.m. will be the Longhorns first game since their 64-45 loss to South Carolina in the Southeastern Conference Championship game back on March 9.
Longhorns head coach Vic Schaefer thinks his team lost their edge in the second quarter against the Gamecocks. He now wants his team to remain aggressive as a number one seed.
“We know everybody is coming for us,” said Schaefer. “When I say you got to keep an edge, that’s the edge. The edge is I’m coming for you. I’m hunting you. I’m not on the defensive because you’re coming after me.”
“We have to go out and put our foot down and punch first,” said Longhorns senior guard Rori Harmon. “That’s when we start turning into hunters. We can’t wait on anybody.”
The winner of Texas and William & Mary will play the victor between No. 8 Illinois and No. 9 Creighton on Monday, March 24.
