Unfinished, vandalized homes in south Austin torn down

Date:

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Unfinished homes in south Austin, that had broken windows and tattered roofs, are now torn down. The homes were covered in graffiti, with tall weeds growing in the driveway.

The city of Austin’s Development Services Department told KXAN as of March 12, all the residential structures on the property were demolished.

According to the subdivision’s website, the Southstone subdivision on West Dittmar Road in south Austin was under construction.

However, neighbors in the area said construction abruptly stopped awhile ago, and people started vandalizing the homes.

The situation prompted the city of Austin’s Development Services Department to get involved. The department received a total of 16 complaints about the subdivision.

Complaints ranged from:

  • Illegal dumping
  • Trash
  • Tall weeds and grass
  • Pests
  • Unsafe structures

At the time, the department told KXAN it regularly visited the property, conducted clean-ups and placed surveillance cameras to monitor illegal dumping. However, now that the structures are torn down and the property has been mowed, the department said the code violations will be closed.

According to the site plan that was approved earlier this month, the owner plans to build condominiums on the property.

KXAN reached out to the owner and is waiting for a response.
